Application & Function
L-ergothionein (ET) is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative first discovered by French chemist Joseph Louis Gautier in 1909. L-ergothionein is a safe and non-toxic natural antioxidant that cannot be synthesized by the human body and needs to be ingested through food. The OCTN1 transporter protein discovered in 2005 is responsible for its enrichment in the liver, kidney, and brain. In 2020, Nature listed it as a biomarker associated with longevity. Ergothionein has various physiological functions such as clearing free radicals, detoxification, maintaining DNA synthesis, regulating cellular immunity, and maintaining normal cell growth. Due to its high safety and significant efficacy, it has become a hot topic in antioxidant research and is widely used in the fields of food, cosmetics, and medicine
1. Antioxidant and anti-aging: L-Ergothionein can efficiently scavenge free radicals and slow down oxidative stress damage to cells. Its unique molecular structure allows it to penetrate the cell membrane and enter mitochondria, directly protecting the cellular energy factory from oxidative damage. Research has shown that it has significant effects in delaying skin aging and reducing wrinkle formation, and is therefore often used in high-end skincare products.
