Application & Function
GABA is an amino acid widely present in vertebrates, plants, and microorganisms. GABA is an important central nervous system inhibitory neurotransmitter with good water solubility and thermal stability. It has been confirmed that GABA, as a small molecular weight non protein amino acid, has food safety and can be used in the production of beverages and other foods. Research has shown that consuming a certain amount of GABA has physiological effects such as improving sleep quality and lowering blood pressure.
Although the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) allows the addition of GABA to food and sets a dietary intake limit of 550mg/d for GABA, its main functional characteristics still require rigorous population testing results to support. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined through toxicology experiments that adding GABA to food is safe and can be used in beverages, coffee, tea, and chewing gum. However, it is not allowed to be added to baby food, meat products, or meat containing products. The Chinese Ministry of Health announced on December 12, 2009 that the intake of GABA should not exceed 500mg/day, and its use should be limited to beverages, cocoa products, chocolate and its beverages, candies, baked goods, and puffed foods, but it cannot be added to baby food.
The function of GABA are as follows:
- Adjusting emotions: GABA can inhibit the excitability of the brain's nervous system, thereby reducing patients' anxiety, restlessness, and other negative emotions.
- Improving sleep: Generally, GABA entering the patient's body can form a natural sedative, which can improve the patient's sleep quality.
- Enhancing the brain: GABA can usually increase the activity of glucose polymethacrylase in the brain, thereby promoting brain metabolism and repairing brain nerves to enhance brain function.
- Healthy liver and kidney: After taking GABA, it can inhibit the decarboxylation reaction of liver phosphate, thus playing a role in promoting liver and kidney health.
- Lowering blood pressure: GABA can act on the vascular motor center of the spinal cord, with the effect of lowering blood pressure, promoting vascular dilation, helping to control blood pressure levels, and assisting in the treatment of hypertension.
- Promoting growth and development: GABA may indirectly promote the secretion of growth hormone by improving sleep, reducing stress, and providing some assistance for the growth and development of adolescents.
